The American folk-rock music duo, Simon and Garfunkel performed on The Ed Sullivan Show for the first and only time on January 30th 1966. Following The Four Tops and Topo Gigio on Sullivan, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel closed the evening’s show with “I Am a Rock” on a bare stage lit by a single spotlight. Through their poetic lyrics and vocal harmonization, Simon and Garfunkel captivated viewers both young and old that night. While Simon and Garfunkel appeared only once on the Sullivan stage, they left an unforgettable mark on the show’s history.

Following Simon and Garfunkel’s performance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1966, the duo went on to accomplish many great musical achievements over the next year. In 1967, Simon and Garfunkel recorded the soundtrack album for the landmark film “The Graduate.” The hit single “Mrs. Robinson” helped the album rise to the top of the charts, knocking off The Beatles’ White Album, and earning Simon and Garfunkel a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1968.

In the 1960’s the American music scene was dominated by the so-called “British Invasion.” Throughout the second half of the decade, groups like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Herman’s Hermits and The Animals took America by storm on The Ed Sullivan Show. At the same time a number of talented American groups responded, presenting their own sound and style on The Ed Sullivan Show stage. The Lovin’ Spoonful was one of them, and this year, January 22, will mark the 45th anniversary of the band’s debut on The Ed Sullivan Show.

On January 22nd 1967, The Lovin’ Spoonful appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show for the first time. They kicked off the evening performing their hit: “Nashville Cats,” in which band leader John Sebastian played the autoharp accompanied by the band [Zalman Yanovsky (guitar), Steve Boone (bass), and Joe Butler (drums)] on a farmhouse set. Then, along with the backing of The Sullivan Orchestra, they performed “Darlin’ Be Home Soon.” With a unique combination of folk, rock n’ roll, pop and country, The Lovin’ Spoonful charmed the national audience that night and the show’s ratings were great. The group was such a hit they were invited back to the show for a total of 3 performances that year. It was during The Lovin’ Spoonful’s second appearance on the show on March 19, 1967, that band had the memorable performance of their best-known song “Do You Believe in Magic.”

During the 1960’s, The Lovin’ Spoonful was able to separate themselves from the groups of The British Invasion with their distinctive style and sound. In an interview, John Sebastian recalled that challenge along with his experience playing The Ed Sullivan Show:

“We didn’t fit in with this mold of four mop tops very well. People kind of expected us to imitate the The Beatles in a lot a ways that we didn’t. But Ed Sullivan was the first guy who got it. He got it immediately. He heard our song, he said, ‘Here’s an American group with an American sound.’ And he was so proud, you know, in his own way. I could see that he was excited to present this American thing that also made girls scream and disrupt his show.”

On January 11th 1970, The Ike and Tina Turner Revue took over The Ed Sullivan Theater with an explosive performance that rocked the viewing audience.

That evening, The Ike and Tina Turner Revue opened with a cover version of Creedence Clearwater Revival‘s 1968 song “Proud Mary.” The performance started off with Ike slowly singing the phrase “ro-lling on the rii-vaah.” Tina then took over and rapidly progressed to the up-tempo section of the duo’s No. 1 hit. Tina, wearing a gold, short fringed dress owned the stage with a high-energy vocal performance, while Ike played guitar accompanied by the fast-paced singing and dancing Ikettes. After this exhausting performance, The Revue slowed things down and performed the soulful “Bold Soul Sister,” which was written by Ike. Following the set, Ed called the duo over to say goodbye and tell them he’d see them at the opening of the Las Vegas International Hotel. While this would be the one and only appearance by The Ike and Tina Turner Revue on The Ed Sullivan Show, the duo went down as one of the most exciting acts to every grace the show’s stage.

Following their performance on The Ed Sullivan Show, the 1970’s were not the best of times for Ike and Tina’s professional and personal lives. By 1975, the duo’s popularity was fading and their marriage was falling apart. Just a year later, The Ike and Tina Revue came to an end. While the duo’s run may have been short-lived, they have left us with some memorable moments in music history.

January 6th 2011 marks the 55th anniversary of the 3rd and final appearance by Elvis Presley on The Ed Sullivan Show, which is most notorious for being filmed only from the waist up.

Elvis had generated plenty of controversy across America throughout 1956 with his on-stage gyrations and uninhibited performance style, and some of conservative America considered him to be a negative influence on the youth. In an attempt to avoid any sort of PR backlash, CBS censors decided to shoot Elvis’ performances so his “suggestive” movements would not be visible to the television audience. That evening, filmed from the waist up, Elvis performed a number of hits including “Hound Dog,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Too Much,” “When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again,” and “Peace in the Valley.”

While the account of Elvis’s hip movements not being filmed that evening is well-known, another story which showcased the compassionate side of Elvis Presley often goes untold.

During his final appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on January 6th, 1957, Elvis actually dedicated his last song “Peace in the Valley” to the people of Hungary who were in the wake of the October 1956 anti-Soviet revolution. Elvis, and his manager Colonel Tom Parker, decided the singer should lend his support to the country’s fight against communism. Ed Sullivan even joined Elvis, and asked the TV audience to donate to Hungarian relief efforts. Last year in recognition of this act and his support of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, Elvis Presley was declared an honorary citizen of Budapest, Hungary and had a city landmark named after him.

At the end of that final show, Ed Sullivan made a statement that went a long way in public support for Elvis Presley. Upon the conclusion of Elvis’ last performance, Ed genuinely complimented the singer saying, “I wanted to say to Elvis Presley and the country that this is a real decent, fine boy, and wherever you go, Elvis, we want to say we’ve never had a pleasanter experience on our show with a big name than we’ve had with you. So now let’s have a tremendous hand for a very nice person!”

December 14, 2011 will mark the 42nd anniversary of the debut of the Jackson 5 on The Ed Sullivan Show. On December 14, 1969, decked in snazzy outfits, the quintet hit the Sullivan stage to perform “Who’s Loving You” and “I Want You Back,” along with a cover version of Sly and the Family Stone’s “Stand!” The group, led by Michael Jackson’s one-of-a-kind vocals and charismatic presence, delivered a captivating performance that evening which helped them gain national exposure. It was truly an unforgettable night in music history.

Kicking off their set with the title song from Sly and the Family Stone’s hit record Stand!, the five brothers nailed their routine with exceptional harmonization and synchronized dance steps. Michael Jackson, wearing a now famous purple hat and vest, then shared a cute little story about meeting a girl on the playground at school before launching into “Who’s Loving You.” Michael wowed the audience with his impressive vocal control and raw emotion throughout the soulful ballad. It was hard to imagine that a 10-year-old kid could sing with so much feeling. As Smokey Robinson later put it, Michael at a very young age “had a lot of ‘know’ to be able to sing a song like that.” The group then closed out their set with their first hit single, “I Want You Back.” Following the performance, Ed joined the Jackson 5 on stage and pointed out Diana Ross in the audience, noting her as the one who discovered the young and talented crew (However, it was actually Gladys Knight who initially brought the Jackson 5 to Berry Gordy’s attention). As the Jackson 5 walked off-stage, Ed Sullivan looked to the audience and said, “The little fella in front is incredible.”

That was a special evening on The Ed Sullivan Show. For many people, it is the first time they remember seeing Michael Jackson perform. The Jackson 5 went on to become one of the premiere acts of Motown, with all of their studio releases achieving platinum sales and spawning 22 Billboard Top 40 singles. Below is a trailer for Motown Gold from The Ed Sullivan Show which includes a short clip of that unforgettable December 14, 1969 performance by The Jackson 5.

Q: How do I create links to EdSullivan.com?

A: When you add a banner or link to your website, it will be tagged with your unique ShareASale ID. The easiest way to create links is to visit the Ed Sullivan Show ShareASale Affiliate Page once you’ve been approved. You can access all of these banners and links by logging in your ShareASale Account and choosing from any of the banners or simple text links available.
