Artist Biography

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass emerged as a prominent musical group in the 1960s, led by the renowned trumpet player, composer, businessman, and bandleader Herb Alpert. Born on March 31, 1935, in Los Angeles, California, Alpert began his musical career at a young age, learning to play the trumpet and developing a passion for jazz.

Formed in 1962, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass quickly gained popularity with their infectious melodies, catchy rhythms, and Alpert’s smooth trumpet playing. The group’s signature sound combined elements of Latin jazz, pop, and easy listening, creating a distinctive and upbeat musical style that captivated audiences around the world.

Their debut album, “The Lonely Bull,” released in 1962, featured the title track, which became an instant hit and set the stage for their subsequent success. On November 7, 1965, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass made their way to New York City for their Ed Sullivan Show debut. They were the first act to perform on the show that night, with Ed Sullivan introducing them as “one of the most exciting bands we’ve ever presented”. That night, the group played “Taste of Honey” and “Zobra’s Dance”.

The group returned to the show three years later for a special Christmas episode on December 1, 1968. On a Christmas-themed set filled with modern Christmas trees, The Tijuana Brass performed The Sound of Music’s “My Favorite Things” and “The Christmas Song”. Following the performance, Ed shared a couple of nice words with Herb, saying, “This group, they’re as hot as pistols.” He continued, “Anytime you’re ever in our area, I’m going to turn it over to you.”

Beyond his work with The Tijuana Brass, Herb Alpert also found success as a solo artist, releasing a series of acclaimed albums and singles. He co-founded A&M Records in 1962 with business partner Jerry Moss, building it into one of the most successful independent record labels in the industry. A&M Records signed and nurtured the careers of numerous artists across various genres, further solidifying Alpert’s impact on the music industry.

Along with his musical achievements, Herb Alpert is also a noted philanthropist and visual artist. His philanthropic efforts include supporting arts education through the Herb Alpert Foundation, which has provided grants to numerous arts organizations and schools.
