For generations, The Ed Sullivan Show was where audiences first encountered artists who would go on to shape the soundtrack to their lives. Today, it is with sincere gratitude that we celebrate the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame recognizing Ed Sullivan with the Ahmet Etregun Award. This honor is reserved for those whose belief in artists helped shape the sound and spirit of rock and roll and its influence on youth culture.
Ed Sullivan’s mission was grounded in that very belief.

In retrospect, it is extraordinary how many artists who graced the Sullivan stage are now Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees. From the legendary moments featuring The Beatles and Elvis Presley to the powerhouse performances of Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, and The Everly Brothers, Ed’s stage served as the ultimate proving ground.
In total, a staggering 75 Hall of Fame inductees appeared on his show. Ed Sullivan did more than host a variety hour: he pushed the envelope of American culture by championing a massive range of musical genres. Whether it was the revolutionary energy of Rock, the smooth harmonies of Soul, the sophisticated rhythms of Jazz, or the high voltage electricity of Funk and Pop, Ed gave these artists the national exposure they needed to become legends.
By breaking down barriers and welcoming diverse sounds into millions of living rooms, Ed Sullivan did not just follow the history of music. He helped write it.
